Gauteng Model Boat Club Information

The Gauteng Model Boat Club meets three weekends a month at Emmarentia Dam, Johannesburg, on Saturdays and Sundays from 13h00 to 17h00. See our calendar here.

The GMBC caters for remote-controlled model yachts and electric and steam power boats. Owing to the noise levels, we unfortunately do not permit gas-powered craft.

We are located just inside the entrance to the Johannesburg Botanical Gardens off Olifants Street at the western end of the Emmarentia Dam wall.

Visitors are more than welcome to come and see the models in action on the water and close up. Our aim is that everyone enjoys the time spent together and that we create a group of friends that sail together and have fun as the main priority.

We welcome anyone with scale model radio control boats and radio control sailing boats to come and join us. We even have members who own operational submarines! We are also looking for model engineers and enthusiasts in this hobby to join us. Scratch-built boats are welcome and can be displayed or sailed.

We also have a sail boat racing fleet that is one of the biggest in the country and has a number of different sizes and classes of yachts all competing to get to the finish line first. We have a very competitive Club Sailing Championship for the SeaWind one-meter class.

Powered Scale Models

Members' scale boats show off their builders' amazing modelling skills and there are always models to be seen moving around on the water, including pleasure craft and navy vessels.

Sailing Boats

A number of international and local class kit boats are represented, as well as scratch-built boats. Classes regularly on the water include SeaWind, Naulantia, Victoria, Fairwind, IOM and Focus. Some boats are sailed for pleasure but we also have a very competitive Club Sailing Championship for the SeaWind one-meter class.
